Seminar on “Cookies and Web Tracking “
The LINC is organizing a workshop on Cookie banners, Web Tracking Technologies and Deceptive Design on October 24th. Nine experts will discuss research projects aiming at detecting dark-pattern at large scale, identifying new tracking techniques and understanding user expectations with respect to tracking.

The LINC is organizing a research seminar on web tracking and similar technologies. During this event we will give the floor to academic experts and discuss the of web tracking from three angles.
Session 1 - The possibility to do large scale measurement of dark patterns.
In this session three experts will present tools that have been deployed and tested to evaluate the conformity of websites and/or detect cookies banners that make use of dark patterns. The complexity of defining dark patterns will be discussed as well as the challenges in maintaining large scale analysis of cookies banners.
The session will be composed of these presentations:
- “Automated Large-Scale Analysis of Cookie Notice Compliance” by Ahmed Bouhoula (ETH-Zurich)
- “Legitimate Interest is the New Consent – Large-Scale Measurement and Legal Compliance of IAB Europe TCF Paywalls” by Victor Morel (Chalmers University of Technology)
- “A large scale measurement of Dark Patterns” by Nicolas Rollin (PEReN)
Session 2 – Fingerprinting and email-based tracking
As some browsers block third party cookies and fingerprinting by default, tracking techniques to circumvent these protections. This session will explore other types fingerprinting and email-based tracking techniques.

Session 3 – The user’s perspective on cookie banners
Cookie banners have been there for years and users have been accustomed to them. How do they understand the choices that are presented to them and what design has an impact on their decision?
The following papers will be presented:
- “The Effect of Design Patterns on (Present and Future) Cookie Consent Decisions” by Nataliia Bielova (Inria)
- "It doesn't tell me anything about how my data is used'': User Perceptions of Data Collection Purposes by Lin Kyi (Max-Planck Institute)
- “Dark Patterns and the Legal Requirements of Consent Banners: An Interaction Criticism Perspective” by Cristiana Santos (Utrecht University)
Each session will be followed by a discussion with the audience (on site and online)
During this event, CNIL’s Digital Innovation Lab (the LINC) and Yana Dimova (KU Leuven) will also introduce a new project on the evolution of cookie banners.
How to attend
The event will be hybrid: All the participants of the first session will be presenting in person and the two other sessions will be in hybrid. The event will be in English and will be subtitled.
There are few seats available for those who would like to attend to the event in person. The event will be streamed.
